Chickens and Spiders

Many of you have requested pictures of our house . . .

This is it!

The second picture is of the “living room” and the couch we won’t sit on b/c we keep finding really big spiders (the size of a CD) behind it. We’ve rid the house of eight of them so far.

Next is Ginger in our kitchen.

The fourth one is of the rest of our kitchen and our outdoor shower (no indoor plumbing).

The last picture is our pet chickens (they've taken to our yard b/c they like the food scraps we throw out).

We moved in Thursday (8/31), the day the rain started, and have been setting up house ever since. Saturday was a tough one. All day cleaning and fighting the spiders, mosquitoes and fire ants that continue to invade. Sunday was a bit better. We walked around trying to find a church service (we’re trying to visit each church in the village that’s a member of the VOP Partners) because we didn’t know what time any services were being held. We ended up at the Baptist Church.

Some of you may know that the Baptist Church in VOP has been resistant to joining the Partnership that we’re here to work with. We have hopes of befriending them and getting them to reconsider, but we’ll see. But here’s the good news: The Baptist minister offered to come spray our house for tarantellas! This may not sound it, but is huge. We were feeling so discouraged—Ginger about all the spiders, and Tim about how unhappy Ginger was. We thought it was really nice of Dan (the minister) to help us in such a thoughtful way.

So, what else? We visited the Garcia family the other day. They are one of the poorest in VOP and one of the first that the Partnership built a house for. It was a bit discouraging to see that they still live so poorly, only in a nicer house. We began brainstorming a new goal for the Partnership of helping families improve their quality of life and challenging some of the issues that have made their quality of life poor to begin with . . . a lofty goal! So this is what Tim will be grappling with over the next few days while also making plans for a meeting of the Partnership.

There’s so much more, but we can’t share every story. That will have to wait until we’re home. Thanks for your prayers and support--we're feeling it.

ging, i feel your pain/fright... i've become so familiar with the extended family of ginormous cockroaches living in my house that i have resorted to calling them "the brothers." it makes squealing, "one of the brothers is in my bed again," somehow a bit amusing... hang in there, saturate the house with prayer and DDT, and you'll be just fine! i love you both, and am so proud of you. hope to see you in december or before...

oooooh, spiders the size of a CD!!!

oooooh!

I couldn't do it.

I would be home by now.

I just couldn't do it.

I would have caught the first flight home and sought a long-term treatment facility for SA (Spiders Anonymous).

That house is not big enough to hold 8 tarantulas and me. They could have it!

On another note, is that your bed beside the couch?

If so, oooooh, how frightening… bed... couch... spiders...

I hope it is better by now!!!
